Mopping and Sweeping Including Sports? This is what the expert said

July 18, 2022 by sportslyo

So far, housewives often associate various household activities such as sweeping, mopping and cleaning the house as part of sports. This is often the reason for them not to move the body anymore through exercise.

So, what do you think about the expert’s explanation? dr Andhika Raspati from PPDS Sports Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI) who often shares interesting content about sports on his personal Instagram account, @dhika.dr also gives an explanation.

According to him, any activity that involves muscle contraction to move can be called physical activity. But physical activity is divided into three levels.

First, said Dr. Andhika, is Non-Exercise Physical Activity (NEPA). All the movements we do on a daily basis, including mopping, sweeping and mixing cement can be classified as NEPA.

“NEPA can increase daily calorie ‘burning’, but its fitness leverage is still inferior to the level above it, namely exercise ,” said Dr Andhika in his upload on Instagram on Friday (14/6/2019).

The second is exercise or physical exercise. At this level, said Dr. Andhika, the thing that distinguishes NEPA is the determination of the structure, namely heating-core-cooling, the size includes intensity and volume, and is programmed or routinely carried out.

“For example, run for 45 minutes 4-5 times a week. Before running, there is a warm up first, when running the pace is adjusted, then cool down . That means structured, measurable, programmed,” he added.

The third level is sports. The characteristic of this level is that it has rules, points or scoring, and there can be wins or losses. According to him, this level is the most risky. Therefore, before exercising the body must be fit enough to do so.

“An example of the body’s unpreparedness to exercise is sudden death while playing futsal. Or more simply, an injury due to a muscle that is still weak, but it’s been styled,” he added.

Of the three levels, the level that is emphasized is physical exercise, especially for the general public. Apart from being more effective for improving fitness than NEPA, from a medical point of view, the risk is lower when compared to exercise, because the intensity can be regulated, monitored, and maintained during exercise.

So, mopping or sweeping can’t be called a sport yet!
